In my work I deal with a variety of topics ranging from phantom memories and dreams to Soviet architecture and its impact on people. The three main themes are architecture, folklore and religion.
Аrchitecture. I am inspired by complex structures and multi-layered compositions, both ex- and interiors. I study the theme of architecture in different aspects, aesthetic and mental-emotional. In works where I study architecture aesthetically, I try to document the atmosphere and impression of a building, a complex of buildings or a city. In doing so, I aim to capture a particular architectural phenomenon for future generations in a pictorial medium. Studying architecture from an emotional and mental perspective I ask how architecture affects people, how form and mass can be used to influence populations, and what generations of people and how grow up in particular architectural environments.
Folklore. Folklore is a topic I started to touch on at the very beginning of my creative journey. In this theme, I am not looking for a narrowly specialized subject and do not define the theme geographically. In my creativity there are both works with oriental and Arabic motifs and closer Finno-Ugric and northern ones. The main interpretation of folklore in my art is the idea of blurred temporal boundaries, and an attempt to transfer and connect our reality with the so-called “parallel world”, which for many exists only as an ephemeral space but not as a physical one. In my work I try to convey “mysticism” and folklore stories in our time, and much closer than we think. The mysticism in my work can be felt in an ordinary apple orchard or in the dark interior of a rustic house. At first glance it is an ordinary plot or landscape, but who knows what may be behind it in reality.
Religion. The theme of religion and the church occupies an important place in his art. It is also a transtheme running through others: architecture and folklore. I am not a religious person, but I feel awe and admiration not only for sacred buildings, but also for the mental content. The main religion that I touch in my work - Christian subjects, images of Christian European traditions of temple building. Also in my art I often interpret the theme of the combination of folklore and religious traditions, which was characteristic of the northern and Baltic regions of Europe.
